Forensic Medicine & Toxicology
History:
The Forensic medicine and toxicology department has
been in existence since the very inception of this college. The subject
initially in the name of 'MEDICAL JURISPRUDENCE' was initiated at this college
for training students of II MBBS.
Not much stress was laid on this subject but some interested teachers mostly
taught it. The medicolegal work mostly academic, was undertaken by the pathologists:
Dr. A.K.Turner, honorary Dr. J.P.Modi (Father of Forensic Medicine), Dr.
C.K.Parikh, Dr. Sudhakar Sane, Dr. Pritam Phatnani.
Administration: Capt. R.E.Dochanji (AD) then his successor Dr. V.V.Jadhav,
Dr. C.K.Deshpande (Dean & Head of Forensic Medicine) & Dr. Mrs Satoskar
(AD)
Retired teaching staff: late Dr. C.A. Franklin. All of who are the corner
stone of this department. Thus the teaching was nominal. However it must
be stated that many eminent persons have been associated with this department
even these days as mentioned above.
In August 1970 Dr. Tembe (Pathologist) was appointed full time lecturer
and promoted in 1975 as an associate professor and Head of dept. (the position,
which he held until he voluntarily retired in Dec 1985). After his retirement
in the year 1986, Dr. C.A.Franklin, retired Head of dept. of forensic medicine
at Grant Medical College & Police Surgeon of mumbai chaired the dept. on
a contract basis. Special mention must be made of Professor Tembe for his
determination and hard work from his first employment as a laboratory attendant
in this institute to Assoc. Prof head of dept of forensic medicine and first
Vice Principal of Krishna medical college Karad.
In the earlier days the department made its humble beginning by occupying
the part of the passage on first floor of the college, which connects the
library building.
Dr.(Mrs) PM Pai the then Dean, with her kind courtesy allotted departmental
grant and extra space because of which this department has the present look
which now has a Museum, seminar room, models which are one of its kind,
rare collection of poisons, weapons etc.
On April 15th 1995 first time in the history of Mumbai Municipal Corporation
colleges, Dr.Rajeev Sahankarrao Chaudhari was selected & appointed by the
MPSC as full time qualified [MD (forensic medicine& toxicology) & DFM] Professor
in the Forensic medicine & toxicology department and he took over as a Head
