Biochemistry

Background History

In 1959, Biochemistry specialty born without individual existence under Department of Physiology. In 1973, Biochemistry arose as an independent section under the wings of the Department of Physiology. It was located on 2nd Floor, College Building, Seth GSMC & KEM Hospital, Parel, Mumbai.

Later third floor of the college building was built and Department of Physiology was shifted with Biochemistry Section to the 3rd floor.

Later in 1978, Dr. K. G. Tanksale, took over as the first HOD of an independent Department of Biochemistry, which was weaned off from Department of Physiology. Biochemistry became an individual specialty subject for First MBBS.

The initial staff included stalwarts in Biochemistry – Dr. K. G. Tanksale, Dr. P. Modi, Dr. Kumana (Engineer), Dr.A.V.Potnis, Dr. V. L. Patil, Dr. Tembe,Mrs.M. Kamath, Mr. Rajadhyaksha, Dr. B. S. Kulkarni and Dr. N. G. Magar.

DR SP Taskar joined the department of Biochemistry in 1970. She worked as a faculty and researcher under the guidance of Dr Tanksale and guided many PhD students. Her contribution for the CVTC Biochemistry laboratory and research for several funded projects was tremendous. She retired in 1993 and continued to mentor many masters and PhD candidates even after her retirement.

In the past years, the laboratory services were catered through a central laboratory (Lab 44) which included all three specialties Pathology, Microbiology and Biochemistry. Sustained and extensive efforts by Dr. K. G. Tanksale, resulted in the formation of CCBL (Central Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory) as separate biochemistry specialty laboratory. Dr. B. S. Kulkarni was in-charge of CCBL. He had extensive knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and hence MCGM took an initiative to create one additional post of Professor for him in the CCBL.

Dr. N. G. Magar was involved in extensive research on lipids.Dr. K. G. Tanksale retired in 1990 and Dr. A. V. Potnis took over.Dr. A. V. Potnis retired in 1996 and Dr. Sucheta P. Dandekar took over.

In 1998, as per MCI Amendment, Biochemistry was started with one separate examination paper as compared to two examination papers in Anatomy and Physiology.

Dr. Anita S. Chalak (Kale) took over as Head of the Department on 1st September 2019, after Dr. Sucheta P. Dandkar got superannuated on 31st August 2019.

The Department of Biochemistry in Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital had the privilege to conduct three National Conferences by ACBI (Association of Clinical Biochemists of India) along with numerous workshops, seminars and CMEs.

  • 5thACBI National Conference was organized by Dr. K. G. Tanksale in 1979.
  • 16thACBI National Conference was organized by Dr. A. V. Potnis in 1990.
  • 37thACBI National Conference was organized by Dr. S. P. Dandekar in 2010.
