Department of Ophthalmology
Background History
The department of Ophthalmology was founded in 1926. It was jointly headed by Dr Ratnakar and Dr G.T.Mody. There is an outpatients’ section on all days of the week and surgeries are performed in operation theatre on all days. This department has a special ward for keratoplasty pateints. The department provides complete eye care in the form of various ophthalmic procedurs like glaucoma surgery, squint surgery, occuloplasty surgery, paediatric cataract surgery , C3R for keratoconus, intraocular lens implantation, keratoplasty,flourocien angiography and vitreo-retinal surgery. There are various diagnostic facilties like ultrasound, slit lamp, perimetry,and fundus camera for outpatients and those referred for specialized services like corneal topo, B scan, OCT, optical biometry, handheld pachymetry, autorefractometer for paediatric evalutaion,VEP, ERG.
There is a well established eye bank with facilities for enucleation, storage and use of eyeballs .This department is a well known centre for diseases of posterior segment of the eye. Photocoagultaion is done with double frquency YAG, YAG PI for glaucoma & YAG post. Capsulotomy for post capsule opacification post cataract surgery, SLT is available for glaucoma.

Inauguration of state of the art equipment in Department of Ophthalmology ,
1]Visual evoked potential [VEP] and Electroretinogram[ ERG] machine on 12/08/2021 by Rotary club of Ghatkopar and Rotary club of Charlotte Hall USA and by Dr. Ila shah
This facility is available only in KEM Ophthalmology department amongst the government and BMC run hospital in the city of Mumbai
VEP/ERG is useful in the diagnosis of lesions of the optic nerve and visual pathway, it is used in the assessment of visual acuity and visual field both in infancy and adults. It is also useful for early detection of retinal disorders like CRAO/CRVO , cone rod dystrophy, Hydrochloroquine toxicity, Stargardt’s diseases, etc and also used in early diagnosis of glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
2] Laser Indirect Ophthalmoscope[LIO] inaugurated on 2/09/2021 by Rotary club of Worli funded by Rotarion Mr Taizoon Khorakiwala and a matching international grant part of the project “Gift of Sight III’’ of 2.28 crore
LIO is useful for treatment of proliferative and non proliferative diabetic retinopathy, detection and treatment of Retinal tears and detachment, retinopathy of prematurity, etc
The goal of our department is to prevent, diagnose and treat the cause of visual impairment in poor and needy patients visiting our department at KEM Hospital.
Inauguration of State-Of-The-Art Equipment at the King Edward Memorial Hospital Department of Ophthalmology
In the Department of Ophthalmology, KEM Hospital, Inauguration of State of the art equipment were launched thanks to Rotary club of Worli, Rotarian Mr.Taizoon Khorakiwala, and Rotary Club international, who helped acquiregracious donations of the Rotary club. The inauguration was convened with the cutting of the ribbon and lighting of the lamp by Respected Dean of KEM Hospital Dr. Hemant Deshmukh, District Governor Rotarian Sunnil Mehra, past District Governer Harjit Singh Talwar, President of Rotary Club Nimesh Sanghrajka, Rotarian Jayant Nairi and Professor & Head of the Department of Ophthalmology Dr. Sheela Kerkar.
The following equipment was acquired in the Department-
- Corneal Topographer with Aberrometer. KEM is the first BMC hospital to acquire this machine.
- Corneal collagen cross-linking machine
- Octopus visual field analyzer that localizes visual field defects along the nerve fibers to the optic disc is to be used for diagnosing and management of glaucoma as well as to aid Neurology and Neurosurgical patients via the detection in optic nerve pathologies
- Operating microscope
- Recording Device
The goal of the KEM Department of Ophthalmology is to eliminate and treat preventable blindness and visual impairment and with the extraordinary team of contributors, donors, doctors, staff and well-wishers, it is on the path towards reaching this very worthy and noble goal.

FACILITIES:
In the outpatients department various procedures are performd like trial glasses, retinocsopy, slit lamp examination, indirect ophtlalmoscopy, direct ophthlamoscopy, perimetry ,keratometry, tonometry, synaptophore, YAG laser, retinal photo coagulation etc.
In the operation theatre various anterior and posterior segment surgeries are performed everyday.
There is well equipped library in the dept for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
