Background History
The Department of Orthopaedics caters to about 400 outpatients daily and has an indoor bed strength of 280. This makes it the single largest department in the hospital, and the largest orthopedic department in the country.
Set up in 1942 as the first dedicated Department of Orthopaedics in India, the services offered are regarded as one of the best in the country.
Manned by an efficient staff, many of whom have obtained further training at some of the finest institutions in the world, the department has earned itself laurels in both the national and international arena. The department regularly produces merit holders at both national and international examinations and is the “Mecca” for orthopedic postgraduate training
Advanced surgical procedures such as spinal surgery, arthroplasty, arthroscopy and sports medicine, limb lengthening, complex trauma surgery and pediatric orthopaedics are performed regularly.

Surgical Training
MS (Orth)
Each year, top rankers of the State and All India Post graduate entrance exams choose KEM Hospital for post graduate training in Orthopaedics giving credence to the fact that it is one of the best training centers of India.
The department provides training for Master of Surgery (Ortho) which is University degree by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS).
The three year course is recognized by the Medical council of India (MCI). Every year 9 residents are admitted. Please contact office for additional details and selection criteria.
Each resident is expected to complete 6 rotations of 6 months duration in various units in the department. Residents receive supervised training in various aspect of orthopaedics. As the residents rotate in various units, they also receive adequate exposure to sub specialities like arthroplasty, arthroscopy and spine.
Senior Registrar
6 positions of senior registrar are available for students who have completed post graduate training (M.S. Ortho). These are 6 monthly positions and students are selected every months following a interview. The details of application for this position are available at the Orthopaedic office (see Contact Us)

1)KEMH PG TRAINING COURSE:
This course is conducted annually by the department of Orthopaedics at KEM and receives attendance from exam-going postgraduate students all over India. There is a comprehensive discussion on different clinical cases, and didactic lectures by eminent faculty from all over India.
2)KEM ELBOW COURSE JUNE 2023:
Course director: Dr. Mohan Desai
Convenor: Dr. Prashant Kamble
Co-convenor: Dr. Pradip Nemade
Theme: Comprehensive update about contemporary management in elbow pathologies
KEMH Elbow Course is the first-ever comprehensive update on the contemporary management of elbow issues including trauma, arthroscopy, pediatric, degenerative conditions, and sports injuries. It included lectures, video presentations, group discussions, one-to-one interaction with faculty members, and hands-on skill application on saw bone models and cadavers.
The course features included a cadaveric workshop on fresh frozen cadavers with hands-on learning of the various approaches to elbow like Kaplan, Kocher’s, TRAP, olecranon osteotomy and elbow arthroscopy, surgeries like ligament reconstruction, and management of tennis elbow, saw-bone workshop to learn fixation of various fractures around the elbow.
3)9th International Meeting of Arthroscopy Academy:
July 2023

Advanced hands-on cadaveric workshop on arthroscopy for knee and shoulder with international faculties and delegates all over India.
4)Fellowship program clinical meetings:
The Department of Orthopaedics has started fellowships in Arthroplasty, Arthroscopy, and Spine Surgery since 2023 with 2 fellows in each subspecialty. The fellows present complex topics related to their respective fields twice weekly.

The departmental library houses around 1500 books related to all sub specialities of Orthopaedics. The books are available for access between 10 am and 4 am.
The library has two computers which have online access to peer reviewed journals via the KEM intranet (see list of journals). Access to online books and teaching material is also available.
