Department of Pathology

Background History

Welcome to the department of pathology.

The department was started in 1926 along with other departments of the college and hospital under able leadership of none other than Dr Vasant Ramji Khanolkar. He was Padma Bhushanand Padma Shree awardee and had done pioneering work on cancer, leprosy and blood groups. He is often referred to as “Father of Pathology & Medical Research” in India. The department has grown enormously since its inception blessed with a legacy of being headed by stalwarts in the subject like Dr Y M Bhende, Dr Suman Kinare and others. The rare Bombay blood group was recognized by DrBhende and co-workers in 1952 in this department. The department has produced a number of fine, dedicated pathologists who are giants in the subject.

Highlights of the Department

One of the first Departments in the country to start sub-specializations in Pathology, starting with the Cardiovascular & Thoracic Laboratories (1968) and Neuropathology Laboratory (1976) under the initiative of late Dr. Suman G. Kinare; Currently 12 Organ-specific Specialties

  • First Municipal Corporation Hospital to have a well-functioning immunohistochemistry laboratory
  • First Pathology Department in Maharashtra to have university recognized Fellow-ship programs in different sub-specialties
  • Performs one of the largest numbers of investigations at a single center in India

    Resident Pathologist 14 residents / year registered for M.D. (Pathology). Resident Pathologists from Tata Memorial Hospital are posted in rotation for training in Autopsy, Clinical pathology & Hematology and speciality laboratories.

B. TEACHING

A) Undergraduate teaching :

  1. Second MBBS Students-About 250 students / year
  2. Occupational Therapy &Physiotherapy (B.Sc.-O.T. & P.T.) – 80 students / year
  3. Bachelor of Paramedical Technology (BPMT) – 05 students / year.
  4. Lectures, Practical program for all the above as per MUHS (Maharashtra University of Health Sciences), Nashik guidelines
  5. Lectures & practical for nursing students are also conducted by pathology department

B). Post graduate teaching:

  1. MD Pathology: 14 students / year

Post graduate teaching and training program consists of working in various laboratories such as clinical pathology and hematology, clinical biochemistry, blood bank, surgical pathology, neuropathology, cardio-vascular and lung pathology, pediatric pathology, gastrointestinal pathology by rotation. In addition, post graduate students have the assignments of carrying out autopsy examinations and emergency investigations. They participate in regular weekly teaching sessions of gross meetings, slide meetings, daily autopsy meetings and monthly journal reviews, case presentations, open forum discussions etc. Also didactic lectures for M.D. students are conducted in collaboration with other colleges

  1. Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (PG D.M.L.T.): 10 students / year.

The course consists of 18 months – 3 terms. First two terms consists of lectures, practical’s and regular practical training in various laboratories. Third term is entirely practical training in laboratories(as per MUHS Nashik guidelines).

  1. Fellowships in pathology: 12 fellows / year

Post-doctoral MUHS recognized certificate course in various sub-specialties of      pathology such as cytology, GI, renal, pediatric pathology, neuropathology and cardiopulmonary pathology

C. RESEARCH PROJECTS

The members of the faculty carry out research projects independently and in collaboration with the clinical departments.

D. OTHER ACTIVITIES 

  • Faculty is actively involved in interdepartmental & inter-hospital specialty meetings
  • Active involvement of faculty members in clinic-pathologic conferences
  • Active participation of faculty in various registries such as Cytopathology, Cardiopulmonary, Breast, Gynecologic and Gastro-intestinal pathology etc.
  • Observership in pathology: Our department regularly has observers in Autopsy pathology, surgical, Gastro-intestinal & cytopathology. Also paramedical students from other colleges come for training in various laboratories
