Background History

History

The Department of Preventive & Social Medicine was started at Seth G. S. Medical College in 1959. Comprehensive health care delivery program Ward Office. The first major contribution was in 1964,when more than 10,00,000 vaccinations were carried out by KEM Hospital Staff and Interns under the guidance of the Department and the cholera epidemic was controlled.Mobile Health Units were first organized in the city of Mumbai by this Department. The Urban Health Center at Malvani,which is 33 kms away from the parent institute, was established in theyear 1978. It was developed as a field practice area not only for undergraduate and postgraduate students in Preventive and Social Medicine but is today used as field practice training area for nursing students from SNDT, RN Cooper,Bhagwati and Harkisandas Hospitals. It provides all promotive,preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.A significant role has been played by this department in setting up department of Family planning, IPP-V, Project and Bureau offices of Family Welfare in Municipal Corporation of Mumbai. It has been a trend setter in notable programmes like child to child, General practice of outpatient in Hospitals, evaluation projects like Evaluation of MCH programme with special reference to UIP, Impact evaluation of IPP-V project, continuing education and training in Epidemiology and Health Management.

Under Graduate Teaching

Admission capacity is 180. Eligibility of admission is decided by the Director of Medical Education and Research, Maharashtra State. The subject of Preventive and Social Medicine is taught to the MBBS studentsfrom 1st MBBS to final MBBS.

Different types of teaching methods like lecture, tutorials, practicals,seminars, case presentation role plays and problem based teaching are adopted by the department. Evaluation is 80% summarative and 20% formative. Emphasis is given to community based teaching.

Postgraduate Teaching

Post graduate Medical Courses:

Diploma in Public Health : 1 year
MD in Preventive & Social Medicine : 1 year

The registered candidates complete 2 terms of 6 months tenure each for DPH and 6 terms for MD.

Postgraduate teaching consist of lectures, seminars, journal, clubs, clinico-social case reviews, community projects, participation insurveys, different outpatient clinics, management of different health programmes, planning and implementation of IEC activities. They are required to conduct a study and submit the dissertation to the University.

Department has 2 Professors, 4 Associate Professors and 12 Lecturers, with MSWs, One Health Visitor and other paramedical and clerical staff.

Institutional Activities

Management of General Practice O.P.D. of KEM Hospital:-

PSM department has been managing GP OPD (No.109) since last 5 years. All the new patients (both males and females) coming to KEM Hospital with medical complaints are examined by interns, residents, lecturers and Associate Professors belonging to PSM Department. The treatment is also provided to the patients. If necessary, the patients are referred to specialists. It is observed that 60% of the patients attending hospital are managed by GP OPD.

Management of Immunization clinic of KEM Hospital:-

PSM Department has been managing the immunization clinic. Immunization against 6 VPD’s are given everyday in the afternoon except Saturday.

Conducting IEC (Information, Education and Communication) activities in KEM Hospital:-

An IEC cell has been established in PSM Department which is equipped with health educational material for general population and also for class III & IV staff members of KEM Hospital. IEC activities are carried out by interns, residents and Associate Professors in different wards/GPDs of the hospital on different topics like ANC-PNC care, Prevention of HIV/AIDS, Personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, T.B., Child care etc. using IEC material. Health exhibition are also arranged periodically by IEC Cell.

Community Activities

Naigaon Health Centre:-

In order to carry out teaching and training of undergraduate medical students, interns and residents doing Diploma/MD (Community Medicine) in community work, a health centre has been established by PSM Department in Naigaum area which is about 1 k.m. from the parent institute. Through Naigaum Health Centre, comprenhensive health services like Under five clinic, Medical relief, IEC activities etc. are conducted for training medical students.

Malvani Health Centre (Malad West) :

An Urban Health has been established by PSM Department at Malvani to offer comprehensive health care services to about 1.1 lakh poor and needy people living in slum/slum like areas. The centre is located about 34 kms from the parent institute. In addition to providing health services to slum population, the Urban Health Centre also provides practical training to interns, post graduate students (Diploma/MD in PSM), student nurses from L.T. College of Nursing, Bhagwati Hospital,Cooper Hospital etc. Various research project related to community health are also undertaken at the UHC, Malvani population.

Child to child programme was developed at MHC and is accepted as one of the effective methods of health education internationally.

Research Projects & Training Programme:

Department of PSM is involved in conducting following research projects:

  1. Endline Impact Evaluation of India Population Project funded by WorldBank.
  2. Epidemiological study of Preventable cancers in a community.
  3. Community based interventions for control of Rheumatic heart disease.
  4. Sexual behviours of unmarried adolescents in a community.

Training Programmes or Courses:

  1. Department is involved in AIDS training programmes.
  2. Department has established an Epidemiology and Public health initiative (EPHI) which conducts a course in an advanced epidemiology for a period of 1 year.
  3. 2 days workshops on “Research Methodology”.
