Background History

The Department of Orthopaedics caters to about 400 outpatients daily and has an indoor bed strength of 280. This makes it the single largest department in the hospital, and the largest orthopedic department in the country.

Set up in 1942 as the first dedicated Department of Orthopaedics in India, the services offered are regarded as one of the best in the country.

Manned by an efficient staff, many of whom have obtained further training at some of the finest institutions in the world, the department has earned itself laurels in both the national and international arena. The department regularly produces merit holders at both national and international examinations and is the “Mecca” for orthopedic postgraduate training Advanced surgical procedures such as spinal surgery, arthroplasty, arthroscopy and sports medicine, limb lengthening, complex trauma surgery and pediatric orthopaedics are performed regularly.

1) BOS Pelviacetabular Course :

Date- 10-12 July 2015

Convener- Dr.Pradip Nemade

Course Description:

BOS pelviacetabular course is three-day course started in 2011. It includes lectures, video presentations, group discussion, one to one interaction with faculty members and hands on skill application on saw bone models and cadavers. Orthopaedic surgeons aspiring to excel in this specialty will have an opportunity to discuss the aspects of management of pelvis and acetabulum fractures.

Report:

The course started on Friday 10thJuly, 2015 as scheduled. All delegates were registered and breakfast served. This was followed by a small inauguration ceremony and lighting of the lamp was carried out by the dignitaries, Dr. AvinashSupe (Dean, Seth GSMC and KEM Hospital), Dr. S.K.Srivashtava (Head of department Orthopaedics, KEM Hospital), Dr. Ram Chaddha, (President Bombay Orthopaedic Society), Dr. PradipNemade (Convener, BOS Pelviacetabular Course 2015), Dr. PrabodhanPotdar (Co-Convener BOS Pelvicactabular course 2015), Dr. BibhasDasgupta (Prof, Dept. of Orthopaedics, KEM Hospital) and Dr. AtulPatil (Pune) .

On first day, Dr. Supe, Dean KEMH, welcomed the delegates and inaugurated the course. Dr. Srivastava also gave a welcome talk. BOS President Dr. Ram Chaddha, addressed the delegates and discussed management of pelviacetabular fractures that has changed over past few decades.

In the pre lunch session basics of pelvis and acetabular fracture, its imaging and management of common fractures was discussed. Following lunch, common complications and technical notes were discussed. Following tea break, Imaging workshop was carried out to have one to one interaction and active participation of the delegates. Over all satisfaction of the delegates was very good. The day ended at 6 pm.

On 11/07/15, lectures of management of complex acetabular fractures were taken and panel discussion was taken on various aspects of pelvis and associated fracture of acetabulum management and complications. Live surgery demonstration of lateral compression fracture were relayed from operation theater, with active two way interaction between delegates and faculties. Following tea break, first part of saw bone workshop was conducted where the delegates were given hands on practice and tips and tricks of acetabular fracture fixation were mentioned. The day ended at 7.30 pm

On 12/07/15, the cadaveric workshop was conducted in the department of Anatomy. Demonstration of various approaches to acetabulum (Ilioinguinal, subinguinal, Stoppa’s, Kocher-Langenbeck approach,) and placement of plates and trajectory of screw was demonstrated by the faculty. Hands followed this on cadaveric dissection by the delegates. One cadaver was allotted to 4 delegates,(2 per side). The delegates were provided with basic instruments for dissection and fixation.

Feedback forms were collected and certificate distribution was done. The day ended at 4 pm and the course was declared to be over.

 

2) BOS Shoulder Course :

Date- 22- 24 Jan 2016

Convener- Dr. Roshan Wade.

Course Description:- BOS Shoulder Course is a three-days instructional course focused on increasing the knowledge and skills of the orthopaedic surgeons, fellows and residents. It includes lectures, group discussion, one to one interaction with the faculty members, hands-on learning on saw bone models and cadavers and live surgical demonstrations by eminent surgeons. This course gives orthopaedic surgeons an opportunity to discuss management of shoulder diseases as well as technical aspects of trauma surgery, arthroscopy and arthroplasty.

Report:

  • Live surgical Demonstration- 7 shoulder cases including trauma, arthroplasty, and arthroscopy.
  • Panel and case discussion with eminent faculty.
  • Hands-on cadaveric workshop for trauma, arthroplasty and arthroscopy.
  • Hands-on saw bone workshop for arthroplasty and trauma.
  • Didactic lectures on Current issues and Techniques in Various surgeries

 

3) 2nd International Meeting of Arthroscopy Academy :

Date- 30 July 2016

Convener- Dr. Roshan Wade.

Advanced hands-on cadaveric workshopon arthroscopy for knee and shoulder with international faculties and delegates all over India.

 

4) K.E.M. Orthopedics P.G. training course :

Date – 11- 13 March 2016

Convener- Dr. Rishi Aggarwal

Training course for exam post graduate students with comprehensive discussion on different clinical cases, didactic lectures by eminent faculty from all over India.

 

5) B.O.S. Clinical meeting :

Date- 7 th Feb 2016

Convener- Dr. SK Srivastava.

It contains interesting case presentation in various subspecialities of orthopaedics.

 

MS (Orth)

Each year, top rankers of the State and All India Post graduate entrance exams choose KEM Hospital for post graduate training in Orthopaedics giving credence to the fact that it is one of the best training centers of India.

The department provides training for Master of Surgery (Ortho) which is University degree by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS).

The three year course is recognized by the Medical council of India (MCI). Every year 9 residents are admitted. Please contact office for additional details and selection criteria.

Each resident is expected to complete 6 rotations of 6 months duration in various units in the department. Residents receive supervised training in various aspect of orthopaedics. As the residents rotate in various units, they also receive adequate exposure to sub specialities like arthroplasty, arthroscopy and spine.

Senior Registrar

6 positions of senior registrar are available for students who have completed post graduate training (M.S. Ortho). These are 6 monthly positions and students are selected every months following a interview. The details of application for this position are available at the Orthopaedic office (see Contact Us)

Observership

Those interested in observing surgeries in our OTs are welcome to visit our department as observers. The details are provided

Please note that these are general rules. Individual departments may have other conditions. Please check in the concerned departments pages or contact by mail :

Candidates should submit their applications in prescribed form which is available in the Cash Section of the College Office on payment of Rs.339/-

However, those who do not have easy access to this form, can send their application on a plain paper addressed to the Dean, Seth G.S. Medical College, Parel, Mumbai 40012. In the application, they have to mention the specialty/subspecialty in which thy need to do the observership and the period during which they wish to do the same.They can fill the prescribed official form just before commencing the observership

Candidates should submit passport size photo, permanent Medical Council Registration Certificate, MBBS degree/Passing certificate along with the application.

If the candidate is sponsored, a letter in support of the sponsorship be also submitted with the application. In case the candidate is employed, the application mentioning the designation of the candidate should be routed through proper channel.

The candidate should also pay charges at the rate of Rs.1600/- per month and Rs. 3200/- per month for super specialties by Cash or Demand Draft payable in Mumbai drawn in favour of BMC for the proposed General Observership and Observership in Specialised Subject respectively. Observership for non medical personnel (radiographers, technicians in various specialties etc) is Rs. 800/- per month.

Observership rules for Foreign Nationals

Foreign nationals are required to obtain temporary registration from the Medical Council of India (MCI) before they can be accepted as observers in our institution. For this, they have to fill this form. This form should be sent to us along with the documents that are required as mentioned at the bottom of that form. Please note that the demand draft (banker’s cheque/pay order) should also be sent along with the form.

In addition, please make an application addressed to the Dean. Seth GS Medical College, Parel, Mumbai 400012, India. This application can be on a plain paper and should state the specialty/subspecialty in which you want the observership; the period and the duration of the desired observership (maximum 3 months). Please note that, as a rule, you will not be allowed any hands-on experience during the observership.

Thus, in the envelope that you mail us, the following documents should be enclosed.
1. Application for observership – addressed to the Dean.
2. Form for temporary registration with the Medical Council of India and the documents required in that form.
3. Demand draft in favour of the Medical Council of India.

Pl. note that it may take up to three months for us to obtain the temporary registration from the MCI.

Besides the demand draft of Rs. 5000/- for the Medical Council of India as stated above, you will have to pay the following charges on your arrival here before you are allowed to start the observership. These have to be paid in cash.

The charges are:
1. Rs. 350/- for the application form
2. Rs. 1600/- per month as fess for the observership in general specialties and Rs.3200/- per month for superspecialities ( 1US $ = Rs.46 approx)
Some departments may have nominal additional charges for use of their teaching aids and library.

Kindly note that you will have to make your own arrangements for accommodation while in Mumbai.

Departmental Library

Location: 6th floor New Building, Orthopaedic office

The departmental library houses around 1500 books related to all sub specialities of Orthopaedics. The books are available for access between 10 am and 4 am.

The library has two computers which have online access to peer reviewed journals via the KEM intranet (see list of journals). Access to online books and teaching material is also available.
