KING EDWARD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
SETH GORDHANDAS SUNDERDAS MEDICAL COLLEGE
बृहन्मुंबई महानगरपालिका रुग्णालय
With the formal inauguration of the Department of Pharmacology in 1926, a new approach to teaching of the old subject of drugs was adopted and Pharmacology which was a mere Materia Medica transformed into a discipline wherein experimental studies to evaluate the effects of drugs were conducted. The teaching of the subject also underwent a change and was accompanied by practical demonstrations that helped improve the understanding of the action of various drugs. Within the next two decades, the foundation was laid for conducting experimental research utilizing the available equipment and clinical research by collaborating with not only the other departments of the hospital but also with other Institutions.
In 1989, because of the persistent efforts of Dr. SA Dahanukar, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai granted permission to establish the Ayurveda Research Centre (ARC) as a wing of Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. The objective of establishing the ARC was to conduct research with medicinal plants using modern medicine technology, especially for those diseases for which modern medicine cannot offer any curative measures. This is the first centre in India to be established in a teaching institute of modern medicine.
With the passage of time, the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics has kept pace with the developments both in the field of Pharmacology as well as Ayurveda. It has instituted innovations in teaching, which include the introduction of computer aided teaching methods, clinical pharmacy and P-drug concept with emphasis on the procedure for selection of drugs. Small group discussions are now problem oriented. Practical’s involve case-based discussions and skill training using mannequins. The department also excels in research. The services offered by the Department benefit not just the institutional staff members but also the lay people by way of increasing awareness and educating them about, both herbal as well as modern drugs.

The department has facilities for conducting research on the 2nd floor of the mortuary building in the college building and wherein educational activities, experimental and clinical research on medicinal plants and synthetic compounds are carried out.
Pharmacology Research Laboratory & Learning Centre (PRLLC): This centre is located on the 2nd floor of the Mortuary Building. The PRLLC has the following laboratories:
The laboratories in the college building include:
Centre for Animal Studies: The department also has the administrative control of the Centre for Animal Studies of the Institutes. This Centre is registered with the Committee for the Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals. (CCSEA) for breeding and experiments on small animals. Reg. No. 60/PO/ReBi/S/99/CPCSEA. The registration was renewed on 7/10/2022 and is valid till 06/10/2027. The Centre for Animal Studies houses small animals such as mice, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits. All animals are housed and maintained according to the CCSEA guidelines for laboratory animal facility.
The department follows the objectives laid down by the National Medical Commission for both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Academic activities for undergraduate students
The department conducts lectures, small group discussions and practicals in compliance with the syllabus laid down for the subject by MUHS. Practicals are conducted in the form of demonstrations, simulated videos and case studies. Mannequins are used to teach drug administration.
In this era of competition, medical students constantly need to keep themselves updated with medical knowledge as well as with the happenings around them. There is need to nurture self-learning skills in students, so that they become lifelong learners. There is growing evidence that those who take initiative in learning learn more deeply & permanently than those who don’t. Keeping this in mind, the department has initiated the following additional academic and recreational activities for UG students

Research:
The Department is also engaged in involving aspiring undergraduate (MBBS) students in research activities and encourages them to conduct research projects under government research schemes such as the Indian Council of Medical Research- Short Term Studentship (ICMR-STS).
Internship with hands on experience is also provided to select graduate students with science background (biotechnology, microbiology, pharmacy) pursuing their future studies.
Academic activities for Postgraduate Students
The Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics has an intake capacity of 10 residents every year. To train these residents the department has developed a 3-years PG training program in experimental and clinical pharmacology and research with inbuilt formative assessment and provision of constructive feedback to the students. The program includes 9 months of rotational postings in various laboratories of the department over a span of 3 years. The details are: monthly rotational postings in Experimental Pharmacology Laboratory, Neuropharmacology Laboratory, Centre for Animal Studies, Ayurveda Research Centre and PRLLC and Institutional Ethics Committee in the first year of residency. Their academic progress is evaluated at mid post and at the end of the rotational postings. In addition to the above postings the postgraduate students take seminars, symposia, journal clubs, protocol designing, drug updates and put relevant articles on the sounding board. During second year of residency, they are posted for district residency programme for a period of 3 months and also posted in the Dept. of Clinical Pharmacology of our Institutes for training in pharmacovigilance and therapeutic drug monitoring. They are also given the opportunity to do internship for 2 months in a pharmaceutical company. Viva-voce examinations on general and systemic pharmacology are held once every year and also preliminary examination is held for JR3 before they appear for the MD (Pharmacology) examination. Postgraduate students are also involved in research activities in addition to their dissertation and they participate in an experimental and/or a clinical study. Pharmacology related resource materials in the form of diagrams, crosswords, flow charts are displayed on Sounding Board.

Ayurveda Research Centre : This is the first center in India to be established in the teaching institute of modern medicine with following objectives:
This centre is located on the 2nd floor of the Mortuary Building. For the last 34 years, the Ayurveda Research Centre is actively engaged in the research activities pertaining to Ayurveda, the Indian Traditional System of Medicine. In addition, drug samples are tested to check for adulteration with synthetic steroids and/or heavy metals.
The centre manages an Ayurveda OPD located on the 1st floor of the Multistoried building once a week every Friday from 1.30 pm-3.30 pm.
It also has a 10-bedded Ayurveda ward (Ward No 24) located on the second floor of the Multistoried Building. Here, patients who need inpatient treatment (Panchkarma or therapeutic procedures) or volunteers enrolled in the clinical research are admitted. Both, the Ayurvedic physicians as well as staff members of the department manage the OPD and the ward.
The unit of Ayurveda Research Center is under the supervision of Dr. Sandhya K. Kamat and assisted by Dr. RaakhiTripathi.
