Department of Nephrology provides observership for dialysis technicians, which provides hands-on training in maintenance dialysis and critical care dialysis. The observership will be for a period of a minimum of 3 months. A certificate will be provided after the successful completion of the training program. Applications should be made to the Dean at the aforementioned address. Eligibility – Diploma in dialysis technology/ Bsc / D.M.L.T. / 12th with science.
Foreign nationals are required to obtain temporary registration from the Medical Council of India (MCI) before they can be accepted as observers in our institution. For this, they have to fill this form. This form should be sent to us along with the documents that are required as mentioned at the bottom of that form. Please note that the demand draft (banker’s cheque/pay order) should also be sent along with the form.
In addition, please make an application addressed to the Dean, Seth G. S. Medical College, Parel, Mumbai 400012, India. This application can be on a plain paper. It should clearly state the specialty/subspecialty in which you want the observership, the period and the duration of the desired observership (maximum 3 months).
Please note that, as a rule, you will not be allowed any hands-on experience during the observership.
Thus, in the envelope that you mail us, the following documents should be enclosed.
1. Application for observership – addressed to the Dean.
2. Form for temporary registration with the Medical Council of India and the documents required in that form.
3. Demand draft of Rs. 5000/- in favour of the Medical Council of India payable at Delhi.
Please note that it may take up to three months or more for us to obtain the temporary registration from the MCI.
You will have to pay the following charges on your arrival here before you are allowed to start the observership. These are besides the demand draft of Rs. 5000/- for the Medical Council of India as stated above. These are required to be paid in cash on arrival.
The charges are:
1. Rs. 350/- For the application form
2. Rs. 1600/- per month As fees for the observership in general specialties
Or
Rs.3200/- per month for As fees for the observership in super specialties
( 1US $ = Rs.53approx. )
Some departments may have nominal additional charges for use of their teaching aids and library.
Kindly note that you will have to make your own arrangements for accommodation while in Mumbai.

Candidates should submit their applications in prescribed form which is available in the Cash Section of the College Office on payment of Rs.339/-
However, those who do not have easy access to this form can send their application on a plain paper addressed to the Dean, Seth G.S. Medical College, Parel, Mumbai 40012. In the application, they have to clearly mention the specialty / subspecialty in which they want to do the observership, the period and the duration of the desired observership (maximum 3 months).They can fill this prescribed official form just before commencing the observership.
Candidates should submit passport size photo, permanent Medical Council Registration Certificate, MBBS degree( medical degree ) /Passing certificate ( medical degree examination ) along with the application.
If the candidate is sponsored, a letter in support of the sponsorship be also submitted with the application. In case the candidate is employed, the application mentioning the designation of the candidate should be routed through proper channel.
The candidate should also pay charges at the rate of either Rs.1600/- per month forgeneral specialties or Rs. 3200/- per month for super specialties by Cash or Demand Draft payable in Mumbai drawn in favour of BMC for the proposed General Observership and Observership in Specialised Subject respectively.
The charge for Observership for non-medical personnel (radiographers, technicians in various specialties etc.) is Rs. 800/- per month.
If you are an Indian National or a Non Resident Indian (NRI) and your passport clearly states that your Nationality is Indian,then, we do not have to take the permission of the Medical Council for you. This means: You need to send only ONE bank draft for Rs. 1000 for the BMC and need NOT send the other one for the Medical Council of India. Also, the time for processing your application and had hence the lead-time required for your application can be reduced to just 6 weeks providing that vacancies for electives exist during the period desired by you. The fees, however, remains unchanged.

You first have to meet with the clerks in charge of your affairs in the Students’ section on the ground floor of the college building see map.
Ms. Beena Desai is the clerk who looks after your affairs and will guide you on how you should go about beginning your elective. They will help you with the paper work for filling the fees totaling around Rs. 12,000 (remember to get the cash along with you) As a rule you, will be asked to meet the concerned Head of Department before you start attending ward and out patient work.
Prof. Lopa Mehta , former Professor of Anatomy will be your Preceptor and you can feel free to meet her with any personal or professional problems. Her office is on the ground floor of the college building (on the opposite wing the Student’s section) A typical day’s (Monday through Saturday) schedule will start at 8.00 am with a lecture followed by ward rounds from 9.00 am – noon. There are more lectures in the afternoon. On most days you should be free by 5.00 pm. Out patient clinics may either be in the morning hours or afternoon – once or twice a week or more often – depending upon specific specialties. On these days (called emergency days) you are generally expected to be available overnight in the wards to learn about emergency management.
Several canteens and mess facilities are available in the campus and few restaurants near by should generally take care of most of your needs.
KEM hospital is a very busy place with crowds of patients and relatives all over and this may be a little disconcerting in the beginning ; but most people adapt to these conditions rapidly.
At the end of your elective you will be asked to fill up a feed-back form to help to improve the facilities and training we impart to students.
A postgraduate degree in the subject and 5 years experience as a lecturer qualifies one to apply one for the post of an associate professor. These posts are filled by the Municipal Medical Service board. The posts are advertised in leading newspapers in Mumbai in April/May each year and the interviews and selection are made in September/October of that year. The number of positions available each year is very variable and is indicated in the newspaper advertisement.
Selection is based on academic qualifications and achievements , experience and performance at the interview.
The starting pay is around Rs.18,000/- per month. Provision of quarters is subject to availability.
Five years’ experience as an Associate Professor enables one to apply for the post of a professor. The posts are filled by the Maharashtra Public Service Commission and the vacancies are advertised in leading newspapers in Maharashtra from time to time.
Selection is based on academic qualifications and achievements , experience and performance at the interview.
Starting salaries are around Rs. 25,000. Provision of quarters is subject to availability.
