Physical therapy is a branch of Medical science that provides services to individuals to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout their life span; in circumstances where movement and function are threatened by aging, injury, pain, disease, disorders or environmental factors. Functional movement ability is central to what it means to be healthy.

Physical therapy is concerned with identifying the level of and maximizing Quality Of Life and movement potential within the spheres of promotion, prevention, treatment, habilitation and rehabilitation.

Physical therapists are qualified and professionally required to:

  • Undertake a comprehensive examination/assessment of the patient/ client or needs of the client group.
  • Evaluate the findings of the assessment to make a clinical judgment regarding the patient/client.
  • Formulate a diagnosis and prognosis and determine when the patient/client needs to be referred to another healthcare professional for holistic treatment.
  • Implement a physical therapy intervention/treatment program
  • Determine the outcome of any intervention/treatment.
  • Make recommendations for self-management.

This OPD serves patients with acute and chronic cardiovascular and respiratory dysfunction in paediatrics ,adult  and elderly population. It conducts exercise testing, risk factor screening, primary prevention and health promotion and rehabilitation. It also offers joint protection for rheumatological diseases, ankylosing stiffness prevention programme, and treatment of incontinence.

ICU and Indoor–offering services to the critically ill patients on all days of the week including Sundays to patients admitted in Respiratory, cardiac and cardiac surgey wards.

Services Given
Patients having dysfunctions of the movement system following various orthopaedic conditions (mentioned below) are assessed, using ‘International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health’ (ICF), framework for physiotherapy diagnosis and treated with physiotherapy interventions.

The focus is to restore physical function, attain functional independence so that an individual can perform his activities in daily living and participate in society thus improving patient’s quality of living.

Safe and effective Physiotherapy interventions are prescribed as per :

  • Severity of symptoms
  • Stages of tissue healing
  • Structural and Contextual source  of patient’s symptoms
  • Identiying dominant pain mechanisms.

Intervention include electrotheraputic modalities and individualsied exercise programme along with recent advances in the field of Manual Therapy.( mentioned below).

OT PT Oath Taking ceremony

OT-PT Oath taking ceremony ’17 was conducted on 29th March. The ceremony was graced by renowned Australian Physiotherapist Mr. John Gloster who is an ex-physiotherapist with the Indian Cricket team.

In presence of the dean – Dr Avinash Supe, academic dean – Dr Gvalani, HOD PT Dept – Prof Amita Mehta, Mr John addressed the graduates and shared his valuable insights.

It was indeed a prestigious occasion for the institute to welcome Mr John.

Event Highlights

The 23rd world Physiotherapy day was celebrated on 13th September 2019 from 10 am to 3 pm by the Department of Physiotherapy in MLT Foyer under the leadership of Prof. Saraswati Iyer, acting incharge of the Physiotherapy Department.

Respected Dean Sir Dr. Hemant Deshmukh inaugurated the health check camp and actively participated. This camp was organized specially for the employees of Seth G S Medical college and KEM hospital. Participation of the staff and students of Physiotherapy department made it a grand event.

There was an overwhelming response and 250 employees got themselves screened for cardiovascular, Musculoskeletal and Neurologic fitness. It was very encouraging to see the awareness about health among the employees. Physiotherapy department aims to provide fitness facility and guidance to the employees along with the patients.

An audiovisual was played throughout the day highlighting the scope of Physiotherapy and the services offered by the Physiotherapy department.

The Physiotherapy program in Paediatric Physiotherapy OPD is geared towards Functional independence of child, ease of handling for parents and fun.
The age of children treated is few days to 12 years.
These are referred to us from Paediatric Medicine, Paediatric Surgery, Neuro medicine, Neuro Surgery and Orthopaedic. We write back our concerns about the child to referring doctors. With prior appointment child is assessed for his/ her capabilities and disabilities. A short term goal and long term goal plan is formulated on case record form.
Each child is called 1-3 times per week. Parents convenience also is taken into consideration to have maximum compliance.
Every session lasts for 40 minutes – 60 minutes. Rest periods are also given if required.

Observership:

1-3 months observership is available for all subspecialties in radiology.

Radiologists or radiologists in training are given priority over other physicians for this program:

Qualified radiologists should send in a an application on plain paper with a photocopy of their postgraduate diploma/degree certificate in radiology to the following address: (Residents in training should forward their application through their head of department/institution)

In the application please indicate the number of weeks you would like the obervership to be (minimum 4 , maximum 12 weeks) as also the subspecialty/ies you would like to observe.
You will be notified the acceptance or otherwise of the application along with the allotted time slot.

On the day of the commencement of the course, observers will have to pay a fee at the rate of Rs.1600/- per month for conventional radiology and Rs.3200/- for CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Interventional radiology and such similar courses. For observership for radiographers the charges are Rs.800/- per month. Unfortunately, it is not possible for the institution to arrange for accommodation and observers from outside town are advised to arrange for the same before their arrival in the city.

Besides access to clinical work, observers will be able to make use of the department teaching files and books and electronic media library.

On successful completion of the course, an appropriate certificate will be issued by the institution.

Residency

The department provides training for the following courses:

D.M.R.D. Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) Two-year course. Five candidates /year
M.D. (Diagnostic Radiology) Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS). Three-year course (6 candidates /year )
